  1. From John’s Experience – Transforming your Struggles into Solutions

    TEAM BUILDING WITH NASA

    Situation:

At Kennedy Space Center, a consortium of several government contractors had just won the contract to launch Space Shuttles for the next 15 years. The challenge was that the contractors’ allegiance and loyalty were to their home organizations and not to the joint shuttle operation. We were given the task to make them into a single team.

    Solution:

We created a week long course that progressed through a series of tailored exercises and mini lectures on leadership, and utilized the 360° Personal Performance Assessment. By week’s end the team had developed united goals and no longer saw each other as coming from Rockwell or Boeing or Lockheed Martin or Thiokol – but as a valued individual and colleague whom others would now eagerly call or seek out for help long after the class was finished.

    Result:

The team became a unified workforce whose allegiance was to the shuttle program, not just to their individual organizations. The participants learned how to subordinate their individual ego for the sake of the team. In fact, the “team attitude” was so strong that NASA eventually awarded the consortium with an unprecedented award score of “100” out of 100. The Center Director, Jay Honeycutt, claimed this effort had saved NASA hundreds of millions of dollars. He said, “At KSC, John taught us how to manage the complex, high-risk space shuttle launch process, and to do so at almost half the cost!”

    LEADERSHIP TRAINING AT LOCKHEED MARTIN

    Situation:

The chairman of Lockheed Martin Corporation asked us to design a leadership course that could be presented to his executives world-wide to help them prepare for their next level of management.

    Solution:

After gathering data and visiting with many of their locations, for 13 years we guided 42 teams of 20-30 senior executives through a rigorous 12 hours a day week long course, using our 360° Personal Performance Assessment, to target major weaknesses that the chairman had discovered in his assessment interviews.

    Result:

The leadership course became known as the Prestigious Lockheed Executive Institutes, and currently over 80 percent of the 1200 graduates are now in positions two to three levels higher than their former level of responsibility as a senior executive. The course evaluations by the participants contained the highest marks on “content,” “relevance,” “application,” “career enhancing,” and “fun” of any program or course in the corporation’s history.
